A lovely read, thank you Andrew. I can’t wait to be in a position to buy bare root roses and tulip bulbs again. Our new garden will go through an almighty change next year, so there’s not much point in buying anything. I have planted 200 alliums at the front entrance though.
Making an entrance through alliums sounds like the perfect way to arrive! Do you think you'll manage to maintain your very sensible temporarily tulip and rose prohibition, are are you going to play the container loophole?!
Ah thanks for the mention! I don't doubt the watering can method - you know me, I'm always up for a shortcut if I can find one....I just feel a teeny bit sorry for the poor rose's roots if there's a freeze. But roses are hardy! They're resilient! That's why we love them.... Well, one of the reasons.....
I got very pleased with myself for planting narcissus in an unusually timely fashion, and only realised this week that I'd entirely forgotten tulips. Not that I make a point of buying them every year, but as I mention, the old stock is running down.
I am planting bulbs for the first time this fall. Not tulips, but mostly narcissus, with a few crocus and hyacinths. I’ve been told tulips don’t do very well as perennials in my climate zone. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this, something by an expert bulb planter!
So glad you enjoyed it Scott, and I'm sure you'll appreciate all your hard work bulb planting come spring! Tulips do like a cold(ish) winter, so if you're in a zone where that doesn't happen too often they might fail. Longfield Gardens has a good section on plating spring bulbs in zones 8-11 on their website, may be worth a read?! ✨🍂🙏🏼

I've just done it again!! 🤣 x
Haven't planted tulips this year but narcissus 'Bridal Crown' and some Ranunculus. We will have to see what happens 😀

Thanks for the tip about Longfield. I definitely need to read that. I’m in zone 8.
A minefield of hope. Love that. Much needed this week.
Fells like it, doesn't it?!
